Democracies still have some things autocracies lack. The conflict does no good for China. Democracy is what people do.

Practical liberalism: the solid footing they established for themselves beyond the political fight gave them ethical insight into how best to conduct themselves within it. 

How the predominant ideology of our time survived the pandemic. Neoliberalism died of Covid-19. Long live neoliberalism.

While in the early stages of the pandemic optimistic voices believed the threat of the virus would have an equalizing effect that might spark a new sense of community and demand for a more considerate lifestyle, economic crisis is more likely to bring fierce conflicts of interest to the fore.

En om de realiteit te kunnen (leren) kennen, moet je data hebben aan de hand waarvan je tot inzichten kunt komen. En om data te hebben, moet je testen. Waar het om gaat, is dat een waardige dood bij een waardig leven hoort. Waar het om gaat, is dat niemand mag beslissen wie op de aarde mag rondlopen en wie niet.

Covid-19 heeft aangetoond dat sommige staten op de langere termijn falen om de volksgezondheid en het leven in stand te houden, als gevolg van hun toewijding aan neoliberale agendaʼs waarbij de staatszorg is afgeschaft ten gunste van de privatisering. De soevereiniteitscrisis die Covid-19 in de VS, Groot-Brittannië en andere noordelijke liberale democratieën heeft teweeggebracht, onderstreept de interpretatieve kracht die deze mondiale zuidelijke benadering heeft om de aanspraken en grenzen van de staatsmacht opnieuw te benadrukken.

The Covid-19 pandemic has since only elevated the debate about Europe’s digital sovereignty. Combined with geopolitical concerns, including growing sensitivity about China’s rapidly increasing role in the European economy, the pandemic is prompting a review of Europe’s strategic position and appears to be strengthening a belief that Europe should seek greater strategic autonomy.
